The Undefeated
By Ernest Hemingway
When a flying beer-bottle cut short my scarcely distinguished career as a matador, it also terminated my passion for bullfights. Up to that time I had been considerable of an aficionado, in a literary sort of way. I was a great audience for the boys, and had read everything about it in English as well as a great deal in Spanish. But to fly a thousand miles of bumpy air with a set of smashed ribs, remembering jeers, is very hard on an enthusiasm. Thus I later was able to review the material on the subject with that fine, dispassionate attitude which stems from broken love ⦠and to conclude that âThe Undefeatedâ is the best bull-fight story of them all.
MANUEL GARCIA climbed the stairs to Don Miguel Retanaâs office. He set down his suitcase and knocked on the door. There was no answer. Manuel, standing in the hallway, felt there was some one in the room. He felt it through the door.
âRetana,â he said, listening.
There was no answer.
Heâs there, all right, Manuel thought.
âRetana,â he said and banged the door.
âWhoâs there?â said some one in the office.
âMe, Manolo,â Manuel said.
âWhat do you want?â asked the voice.
âI want to work,â Manuel said.
Something in the door clicked several times and it swung open. Manuel went in, carrying his suitcase.
A little man sat behind a desk at the far side of the room. Over his head was a bullâs head, stuffed by a Madrid taxidermist; on the walls were framed photographs and bull-fight posters.
The little man sat looking at Manuel.
âI thought theyâd killed you,â he said.
Manuel knocked with his knuckles on the desk. The little man sat looking at him across the desk.
âHow many corridas you had this year?â Retana asked.
âOne,â he answered.
âJust that one?â the little man asked.
âThatâs all.â
âI read about it in the papers,â Retana said. He leaned back in the chair and looked at Manuel.
Manuel looked up at the stuffed bull. He had seen it often before. He felt a certain family interest in it. It had killed his brother, the promising one, about nine years ago. Manuel remembered the day. There was a brass plate on the oak shield the bullâs head was mounted on. Manuel could not read it, but he imagined it was in memory of his brother. Well, he had been a good kid.
The plate said: âThe Bull âMariposaâ of the Duke of Veragua, which accepted 9 varas for 7 caballos, and caused the death of Antonio Garcia, Novillero, April 27, 1909.â
Retana saw him looking at the stuffed bullâs head.
âThe lot the Duke sent me for Sunday will make a scandal,â he said. âTheyâre all bad in the legs. What do they say about them at the Café?â
âI donât know,â Manuel said. âI just got in.â
âYes,â Retana said. âYou still have your bag.â
He looked at Manuel, leaning back behind the big desk.
âSit down,â he said. âTake off your cap.â
Manuel sat down; his cap off, his face was changed. He looked pale, and his coleta pinned forward on his head, so that it would not show under the cap, gave him a strange look.
